The project
The car arrived with a respray over surface rust in both sills and a rear-bulkhead patch that had been pop-riveted rather than welded — a common shortcut on E-Types that hides serious structural weakness under fresh paint. Full media blasting to bare steel confirmed the sills, floor pans, and both front torsion-bar boxes needed replacement; the bonnet, doors, and boot lid were straight enough to save. The original matching-numbers engine block and gearbox were rebuilt rather than replaced, and correct-date-code SU carburetors were sourced to replace a mismatched later pair fitted decades ago.
Reassembled with correct triple-SU carburetion and a factory-correct Old English White exterior over red leather, cross-referenced against the car’s original build documentation before paint was ordered.
